UK Calls Security Breach During Jaishankar’s Visit ‘Completely Unacceptable’
The United Kingdom has strongly condemned the security breach that occurred during Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to London. A pro-Khalistan protester managed to break past security barriers and approach the minister’s motorcade outside Chatham House on Wednesday evening. The UK government stated that such acts of intimidation or disruption are “completely unacceptable.”
Security Breach at Chatham House
The security breach took place at Chatham House, home to the Royal Institute of International Affairs, on the second day of Jaishankar’s UK visit. Social media footage showed a group of pro-Khalistan protesters demonstrating with yellow flags while chanting slogans such as “Khalistan Zindabad.”
Despite the presence of security personnel and metal barriers, one protester managed to evade security and attempted to approach Jaishankar’s motorcade, raising concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in place.
UK Government’s Response
A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) condemned the incident, stating that the UK upholds the right to peaceful protest but does not tolerate attempts to “intimidate, threaten, or disrupt” public events.
“We strongly condemn the incident that took place outside Chatham House during the External Affairs Minister’s visit. While the UK upholds the right to peaceful protest, any attempts to intimidate, threaten, or disrupt public events are completely unacceptable. The Metropolitan Police acted swiftly to address the situation, and we remain fully committed to ensuring the security of all our diplomatic visitors, in line with our international obligations,” the FCDO spokesperson said.
Pro-Khalistan Protest and Police Action
The pro-Khalistan demonstrators gathered outside Chatham House, where Jaishankar was delivering a talk. The protesters were reportedly holding yellow flags and chanting slogans demanding a separate Khalistan state.
UK law enforcement responded swiftly to the security breach, ensuring that the situation did not escalate further. The Metropolitan Police were deployed to the scene, and the protester who breached the security cordon was immediately intercepted and removed from the area.
