Major Legal Action Against Bengal Minister and Aides

Jadavpur University Chaos has taken a legal turn as the Kolkata Police have filed FIRs against West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, his driver, and Trinamool Congress leader Om Prakash Mishra. This follows the violent ruckus on March 1, where two students were allegedly hit by the minister’s vehicle, leading to severe injuries and hospitalization.

The FIR was lodged just a day after the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench, led by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, directed the Kolkata Police to register complaints from both sides. Until then, the police had only acted on the complaints filed by the Trinamool Congress-affiliated West Bengal College & University Professors’ Association (WBCUPA), ignoring those from the agitating students.

The directive from the High Court has been hailed as a move towards fairness and justice. The court also asked the state government to submit a detailed report on the incident, ensuring transparency in the investigation.

The accused individuals face multiple charges, including physical assault and issuing threats. According to the students, the minister’s vehicle was deliberately driven into the protesters, injuring two students severely. The chaos erupted when students blocked the minister’s car, demanding immediate elections for the university’s student council.

In response to the FIR, the minister and his legal team have denied all allegations, calling them politically motivated. However, student groups continue to protest, demanding strict action against those responsible.

Amit Roy, father of one of the injured students, expressed his relief at the legal proceedings finally taking shape.

“In a democratic country, the police should work democratically. The High Court’s order strengthens our belief in the judiciary,” he stated.

Both injured students remain under medical care, with reports suggesting one may require long-term treatment. Student organizations have rallied behind them, demanding justice and institutional reforms.

The West Bengal government has maintained that the incident was an unfortunate clash and assured a fair inquiry. However, opposition parties have criticized the ruling government, accusing it of using force against students.

As per the High Court’s order, a detailed report will be submitted soon, and investigations will determine if the minister’s vehicle deliberately hit the students or if it was an accident.

The Jadavpur University Chaos continues to stir political and legal debates. While the FIR against the Bengal Minister marks a crucial step towards justice, the case highlights broader issues of student rights and political influence in educational institutions. As investigations proceed, all eyes remain on how the judiciary and law enforcement handle this high-profile case.
