US Confirms Tahawwur Rana's Extradition to India

In a major diplomatic breakthrough, US President Donald Trump has confirmed the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Rana to India. During a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, Trump stated that Rana would “face justice” in India for his alleged role in facilitating the 2008 terrorist attacks.

Who is Tahawwur Rana?

Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian citizen, was convicted in the US for supporting the banned terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He was found guilty of providing logistical support for a foiled terrorist attack in Denmark but was acquitted of direct involvement in terrorism in India. However, India has been demanding his extradition for years due to his alleged involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks that killed over 174 people.

Legal Battle to Avoid Extradition

Despite Trump’s confirmation, Rana has moved the US Supreme Court in an attempt to block his extradition. He has cited multiple health concerns, including a bulging artery, Parkinson’s disease, and possible cancer, calling himself a “walking time bomb.” Additionally, he has claimed that he would face severe torture in India due to his Pakistani origin and Muslim identity.

India Prepares for Rana’s Arrival

After Trump’s announcement, Indian government sources have indicated that Rana could be brought to India within weeks. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that security arrangements are in place. “Our jails are ready for Rana…We kept Ajmal Kasab, so this is not a security threat,” he said.

Once extradited, Rana will be presented before a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, where authorities will seek his custody for interrogation. The Indian government views this extradition as a significant achievement in its counterterrorism efforts.

Trump and Modi’s Commitment to Counterterrorism

During the press conference, Trump reiterated his administration’s commitment to fighting terrorism. “I am pleased to announce that my administration has approved the extradition of one of the plotters (Tahawwur Rana) and one of the very evil people of the world, having to do with the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, to face justice in India,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi also emphasized the importance of global cooperation in tackling terrorism. Without directly naming Pakistan, he criticized countries that support and fund terrorist organizations, stating, “We agree that solid action must be taken to eliminate terrorism that originates on the other side of the border.”

Background on Rana’s Conviction

Rana was arrested in the US in October 2009 and sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in supporting terrorist activities. David Headley, a key convict in the 26/11 attacks, testified against him in court, confirming his involvement in terror-related activities. The Indian government has long pursued his extradition, and Trump’s announcement is seen as a diplomatic victory.

As India awaits his extradition, legal experts suggest that the final decision rests with the US judiciary. If the Supreme Court denies his plea, Rana could be transferred to India within weeks, marking a major success for Indian law enforcement agencies.
