Steve Smith Bids Farewell to ODI Cricket After Champions Trophy Exit
Australia’s Future Without Smith in Limited-Overs Cricket
Australia’s cricketing icon, Steve Smith, has officially announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after Australia’s elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Smith, who captained the national side in the tournament due to Pat Cummins’ injury, led the team to the semi-finals before bowing out to India.
Having played 170 ODIs for Australia, Smith amassed 5727 runs with 12 centuries and was instrumental in securing two World Cup titles for his country. His departure means Australia will have to find a replacement ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a media release by Cricket Australia. He emphasized that his decision allows the team to prepare for future tournaments and groom emerging talent.

Following the defeat against India, Smith addressed the media, acknowledging that inexperience in Australia’s bowling attack played a role in their semi-final exit. Despite the disappointment, he expressed confidence that young players would grow from the experience.
Smith, who scored 73 off 96 balls in the semi-final, remains a crucial part of Australia’s Test setup. With his retirement, Australia now faces the challenge of filling the void left by both David Warner and Steve Smith in their limited-overs squad.
