Telangana Jagruti, UPF Demand 42% BC Quota, Plan Statewide Rail Roko

Samaya Jyothi, a strong advocate for social justice and women’s empowerment, extended its support to the historic BC Round Table meeting held in Medak under the joint leadership of Telangana Jagruti and the United Public Front (UPF). The event, attended by Backward Class (BC) leaders and social organizations, was spearheaded by Telangana Jagruti President and BRS MLC K. Kavitha, who made a forceful call for action on BC reservations.

In a rousing speech, Kavitha declared that unless the Central Government passes the pending BC Reservation Bill, Telangana will witness a statewide “Rail Roko” movement on July 17. The protest, she emphasized, would involve leaders and members from all BC associations across the state, including students and women, highlighting the urgency and unity of the movement.

Samaya Jyothi’s Solidarity

Samaya Jyothi, known for empowering marginalized voices and advocating gender equity in political participation, backed the call for inclusive reforms. Representatives stressed that the demand for 42% BC reservation is not a political issue, but a fundamental human rights movement.

“The denial of rightful representation to over 50% of the population, especially to BC women, is a violation of social justice. We commend Telangana Jagruti for taking bold steps to ensure representation and equity,” said a Samaya Jyothi spokesperson.

Key Announcements from the Meeting

The Medak Round Table served as a platform for a series of critical announcements:

  • 42% reservation for BCs must be passed at the national level.

  • Rail Roko (Rail Blockade) will be conducted on July 17.

  • A sub-quota for BC women must be included in the Women’s Reservation Bill.

  • BC students, youth, and especially women must take part in large numbers to demand their constitutional rights.

  • Caste census data should be made public down to the gram panchayat level.

  • Many BC communities remain unrepresented even at the ward or sarpanch level.

  • The Congress government, despite introducing three BC bills in the Assembly, must push for national approval.

  • The BJP government at the Centre has yet to act on the BC bills, despite widespread pressure.

Criticism of Political Silence

The meeting did not shy away from naming those who have failed to act. Medak BJP MP Raghunandan Rao was criticized for his silence on the BC Reservation Bill.

“Why is Raghunandan Rao not speaking about BC rights? Why is the BJP government not passing the bill? People must question these leaders,” Kavitha urged.

Social Rights, Not Political Agenda

In a sharp rebuttal to detractors who accused the movement of being politically motivated, Kavitha clarified:

“This is not a political platform. This is a social and human rights struggle. When 56% of a population is demanding rights, how is it political? This is justice.”

Opposition, Threats, and Unity

Kavitha revealed that certain elements in Medak had attempted to intimidate BC leaders to prevent them from attending the event.

“This fear is telling. They know the BC voice is rising, and it cannot be silenced anymore.”

Despite such obstacles, the Round Table saw a large turnout, symbolizing a growing groundswell of support among BC communities across Telangana.

The Road Ahead

The July 17 Rail Roko is expected to be a major event in Telangana’s political calendar. Samaya Jyothi, Telangana Jagruti, and UPF called on civil society, student unions, and women’s organizations to mobilize.

“Jagruti spoke at the right time, and as a result, three BC bills were passed in the Assembly. We must carry that momentum forward and ensure they are passed at the Centre,” said Kavitha.

With public anger growing over underrepresentation and continued stalling by the Central Government, the movement for BC reservation is no longer a distant demand—it is an urgent necessity.

Following Trump’s decision, Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that Canada would suspend its second wave of retaliatory tariffs, originally set to target $125 billion worth of US products. He stated that Canada would continue negotiating for the complete removal of tariffs.
