Andhra Pradesh Government Joins Rapido to Provide E-Bikes and E-Autos for Women’s Employment
Empowering Women: E-Bikes and E-Autos Provided to Self-Help Group Members
In a landmark initiative aimed at empowering women and fostering financial independence, the Andhra Pradesh government has partnered with bike taxi service Rapido to provide employment opportunities through the use of e-bikes and e-autos.
This partnership is part of a larger strategy to ensure that women in the state have access to sustainable livelihood options, while also addressing the gender disparity in the transportation and gig economy sectors. The initiative will focus on enabling women from self-help groups (SHGs) to work as drivers on the Rapido platform, thus ensuring their economic independence and boosting their participation in the workforce.
The core of this partnership lies in the distribution of e-bikes and e-autos to women with a valid driving license who are members of self-help groups. The government aims to create job opportunities in urban and semi-urban regions, offering women a chance to take charge of their own economic future.
The initial phase of this initiative will see the deployment of 400 e-bikes and e-autos in larger cities such as Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. These cities have a significant demand for transportation services, which makes them ideal locations to begin this empowerment project.
Following the success of this launch, the initiative will expand to smaller cities including Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Guntur, Nellore, Tirupati, and Kurnool, where an additional 200 vehicles will be distributed. This phased rollout will enable a smooth transition into the program while reaching a wide network of women across the state.

How the Mudra Scheme Supports Women Drivers in Andhra Pradesh
One of the most significant barriers for many women seeking employment opportunities in the gig economy is the upfront cost of purchasing a vehicle. The government, recognizing this challenge, will assist women in obtaining these e-vehicles by offering financial support through the Mudra scheme and other self-employment programs.
The Mudra scheme is designed to help small businesses and individuals with no formal credit history access loans to buy vehicles or start businesses.
By leveraging this financial scheme, women who wish to participate in the initiative will be able to secure loans to purchase their e-bikes or e-autos, which will allow them to join the workforce without the burden of an initial financial strain. This innovative approach not only provides a source of income for women but also encourages entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency, key factors in empowering women in any community.
Rapido, a fast-growing bike taxi service, will play a pivotal role in the success of this initiative. As part of the agreement, the platform will connect the women drivers with riders, ensuring that they have access to a large customer base. The company will provide 300 bookings per vehicle per month, which guarantees a steady flow of income for the women drivers.
In the first three months of their participation, women drivers will be exempt from paying platform charges to Rapido, allowing them to keep the entire amount they earn. After this initial period, the platform will charge Rs. 1,000 per month from each driver, a relatively low cost that ensures affordability. This business model offers women the opportunity to work without financial pressure and gradually build a stable income.
This initiative is not just about providing short-term employment opportunities. It represents a broader, long-term vision for women’s empowerment in Andhra Pradesh. The ability to work as a driver offers women an alternative to traditional employment routes, particularly in rural areas where job opportunities for women may be limited.
By making the process of entering the workforce more accessible and affordable, the government is setting the stage for long-lasting change in the lives of women. Moreover, this initiative promotes self-reliance, which is crucial in ensuring that women can support themselves and their families.
This financial independence can also have broader social impacts, including improved decision-making power within households, greater control over personal finances, and increased social mobility.
