Rishabh Pant’s Miraculous Comeback Earns Nomination for ‘Comeback of the Year’ at Laureus 2025

Pant’s Resilience Shines Through: A Story of Determination and Hope

Team India wicket-keeper batter, Rishabh Pant, has been nominated for the prestigious ‘Comeback of the Year’ award at the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards. Pant’s remarkable recovery and return to competitive cricket following a life-threatening car crash in December 2022 has stunned the world. After spending more than a year recovering from serious injuries, Pant defied the odds to make an astonishing return to the game in 2024.

His comeback journey began with the Delhi Capitals in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), where he led the team with grit and determination. Pant scored 446 runs in 13 matches, though his efforts weren’t enough to secure a playoff berth for his team. Nevertheless, his performance earned him a spot in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Pant played a pivotal role in India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, contributing 171 runs in 8 matches at a strike rate of 127.61. His performance has been hailed as nothing short of inspiring, solidifying his place in the world of cricket. He now stands among other nominees, including Spanish motorcyclist Marc Marquez, American swimmer Caeleb Dressel, Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade, Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmushave, and Swiss ski racer Lara Gut-Behrami, for the coveted Laureus award.

What the Laureus Nomination Means for Rishabh Pant and Indian Cricket

The winner will be announced during the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony on April 1, 2025. Should Pant win, he would become the second Indian cricketer to take home a Laureus Sports Award, following the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who won the Laureus Sporting Moment Award (2000-2020) for India’s 2011 ODI World Cup triumph.

Pant’s form continued to impress in 2024, as he played 10 T20Is for India, scoring 222 runs with an average of 22.75 and a highest score of 49. In Test cricket, he accumulated 677 runs across 10 matches at an average of 37.61, including a century against Bangladesh in Chennai. Pant was also India’s highest run-scorer in the three-match Test series against New Zealand, although India faced a humiliating 3-0 whitewash in the series.

Pant’s remarkable journey continues as he prepares to lead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL 2025. After a record-breaking purchase of Rs 27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Pant is eager to guide LSG to their first-ever IPL title. Despite being part of India’s squad for the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pant is yet to feature in the tournament. However, he remains focused on the IPL, where his leadership and experience are expected to shine in the upcoming season.
