- Punjab Police Conducts Raids On Farmer Leaders Ahead Of Chandigarh Protest
Breakdown Of Talks Between Punjab Government And SKM
Farmer Leaders Criticize Government’s Actions
Ahead of the planned protest in Chandigarh on March 5, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) leaders have alleged that Punjab Police conducted raids at multiple residences of farmer leaders in the early hours of Tuesday. Several leaders were reportedly detained, prompting concerns over the government’s actions against the protest. However, there has been no official statement from the police regarding these claims.
The police action came just a day after a meeting between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and SKM leaders failed to yield any resolution. Many farmer leaders, apprehensive of further crackdowns, have reportedly gone underground to evade detention.
The SKM has announced a week-long sit-in protest in Chandigarh to press for their demands, which include a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP), withdrawal of the Centre’s National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing, implementation of state agricultural policies, and ensuring payment of sugarcane arrears, among others.

Bharti Kisan Union (Lakhowal) general secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal criticized the police action, asserting that such measures cannot silence the farmers’ voices. “We are fighting for our rights and will not be deterred by police actions,” he stated. Lakhowal also reported police deployment at his residence.
Similarly, BKU (Rajewal) vice president Mukesh Chander Sharma claimed that his residence was raided at 4 AM, condemning the government’s approach toward handling the farmers’ demands.
The breakdown of discussions between the Punjab government and farmer leaders has further escalated tensions. While Mann has reiterated his willingness to continue discussions, he also emphasized that public inconvenience due to protests should be minimized.
The ongoing unrest is reminiscent of the 2020 farmers’ agitation against the now-repealed farm laws, with SKM once again at the forefront, pushing for farmers’ rights and policies beneficial to the agricultural sector.
