Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil a series of projects totaling ₹15,400 crore during his visit to Kolkata on Wednesday, March 6. This visit marks his second trip to West Bengal within a span of five days as part of his 10-day tour across 12 states and union territories
Among the projects to be inaugurated by PM Modi is the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, marking India’s debut into underwater Metro services. The 4.8-km stretch, constructed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore, boasts the deepest Metro station in the country at Howrah, situated 30 meters below ground level. This corridor will significantly enhance connectivity, particularly to key areas such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.
While the inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section will take place today, passenger services will commence at a later date, as per the Central Railways.
Additionally, PM Modi will also launch other train services aimed at improving urban mobility, including the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister will dedicate several other projects across different cities, including the Pune Metro’s Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project from SN Junction to Tripunithura Metro station, Agra Metro’s Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar stretch, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor.
These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure and facilitating smoother urban mobility across various regions of the country.
