Unyielding Stand: Congress Vows To Protect Telangana's Water Rights From BRS-Era Failures
Krishna Water Rights Telangana has emerged as the rallying point for the Congress Government as it launches a determined and multi-pronged campaign to restore justice to Telangana’s farmers and reclaim the state’s rightful share of river water.
During an inspection of ongoing irrigation works on the Krishna River in Suryapet district, state leadership made it abundantly clear that there would be no compromise on Telangana’s water rights. This firm stance was announced against the backdrop of what has been described as a crippling irrigation crisis inherited from the previous BRS Government.
Farmers’ Rights, Not Political Rhetoric
The Congress Government emphasized that equitable access to river waters is essential not only for agricultural productivity but also for the prosperity and long-term sustainability of Telangana. The leadership made it clear: Telangana will employ every possible means — consultations, negotiations, or legal action — to protect its fair share of both Krishna and Godavari waters.
“Our fight is for justice, for our farmers, and for Telangana’s future. The Congress Government will go to any length — including the Supreme Court — if needed.”
A Tale of Betrayal: The BRS Record on Krishna Waters
The government leveled scathing criticism against the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) regime, accusing it of a historic betrayal. Despite Telangana’s fair and just claims, the BRS Government allegedly settled for a reduced share of Krishna waters — restricting Telangana to just 299 TMC, while accepting 512 TMC for Andhra Pradesh, despite the Krishna Tribunal allocating 811 TMC to the combined state.
“This decision by the BRS was nothing less than a betrayal. It will haunt Telangana’s farmers for generations.”
Moreover, officials accused the BRS of abandoning long-term visionary projects in favor of high-cost, low-output alternatives driven by corruption and vested interests.
₹16,000 Crore in Annual Debt – A Legacy of Mismanagement
One of the most damaging outcomes of the previous regime, according to the Congress Government, is the staggering ₹16,000 crore in annual interest payments that Telangana is now forced to make on irrigation-related loans.
This financial burden, the Congress alleges, is directly tied to irrational project design, unsustainable loan structures, and non-transparent execution, especially in reference to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, which was built at an astronomical ₹1 lakh crore.
“The people of Telangana are paying the price for bad decisions and questionable motives. It is not just mismanagement — it is a sin against our people.”

Congress Revives Vision of Pranahitha-Chevella
Recalling the original vision under the Congress Government during united Andhra Pradesh, the leadership pointed to the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Pranahitha-Chevella project — initially proposed to be constructed at Tummadihatti with an estimated budget of ₹38,000 crore.
This project was designed with scientific parameters, intended to serve lakhs of farmers efficiently. However, it was abandoned by BRS in favor of the Kaleshwaram project, which now lies largely defunct.
Legal and Technical Readiness
The Congress Government made it clear that it is ready to fight legally and technically for Telangana’s share in Krishna and Godavari waters. If dialogues with the Government of India do not yield fair results, the state would not hesitate to escalate the matter legally.
Officials emphasized that water allocations must be based on key parameters like:
Catchment area
Irrigable ayacut
Population
Historical usage and equitable distribution
This approach, they argue, will result in justice for Telangana, ensuring the state gets what it is rightfully entitled to.
A Farmer-Centric Administration
In direct contrast to the BRS regime, the Congress Government reiterated its position as a farmer-first administration, committed to delivering assured and timely irrigation to every corner of the state, especially in combined Nalgonda district, which has historically suffered from water scarcity and under-irrigation.
“Our farmers deserve more than broken promises. They deserve reliable irrigation and a government that fights for their rights,” the leadership stated.
Empowering Telangana, One Drop at a Time
With water at the center of Telangana’s agricultural economy and rural development, the Congress Government has drawn a clear line — no surrender, no compromise, only action.
By bringing together technical expertise, legal preparedness, and administrative resolve, the government hopes to correct the past failures and deliver a future where every acre of Telangana’s farmland thrives with rightful water access.
Final Thoughts
The battle for Krishna Water Rights Telangana is more than a technical dispute — it is a moral and political obligation to the state’s farmers. The Congress Government’s stand signals a new chapter of assertive governance, accountability, and justice.
As the state charts a path forward, Telangana’s farmers can be assured: their rights are finally being defended with determination, not compromised for politics.
