Germany Refuses to Interfere in Kejriwal’s Arrest Proceedings Following Modi Government’s Firm Stance
Germany Refuses to Interfere in Kejriwal's Arrest, Citing Respect for Indian Judicial Process
In a notable turn of events, Germany has opted to stay out of the arrest proceedings involving Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, following a stern message from the Modi government. A spokesperson for Germany emphasized on Wednesday that the Indian Constitution enshrines fundamental human rights and freedoms, underscoring the nation’s commitment to democratic values.
Germany Stays Neutral on Kejriwal’s Arrest After India’s Diplomatic Push
The Modi administration’s strong objection to remarks made by a State Department spokesperson from the United States regarding Kejriwal’s arrest in a Liquor scam prompted Germany to take a decisive U-turn on the matter. Last Saturday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned a senior German diplomat to express discontent over what was perceived as condescending remarks interfering with India’s internal affairs and judicial process.
However, India’s firm stance bore fruit, as the German spokesperson declined to disclose any details about the summons in Delhi and refrained from commenting on the case. Instead, the spokesperson highlighted the mutual interest in deepening cooperation between Germany and India, with upcoming government consultations anticipated later in the year.
The German response aligns with India’s assertion that democratic nations, like the US, must exercise caution when commenting on the legal processes of fellow democracies. New Delhi has emphasized the importance of mutual respect for each country’s internal affairs to prevent setting negative precedents.
Additionally, another Western European country has reportedly informed India of its decision to refrain from commenting on Kejriwal’s arrest in an Enforcement Directorate money laundering probe related to the Delhi Excise Policy scam.
