Amid escalating tensions in the national capital, Delhi Metro authorities have announced the closure of entry/exit gates at multiple stations for security reasons. The affected stations include Lok Kalyan Marg Metro Station, Gate no 3 of Patel Chowk Metro Station, and Gate no 5 of Central Secretariat Metro Station, all of which will remain closed until further notice.
The security measures come in response to a protest organized by supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on March 26. The demonstrators took to the streets to voice their opposition to the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. In a swift response, the Delhi Police detained several protesters, including AAP leader Harjot Singh Bains, outside the Patel Chowk metro station.
Prior to the protest, the Delhi Police had issued warnings and imposed restrictions on public gatherings. Announcements were made outside the Patel Chowk Metro station, indicating that no permission had been granted for protests and invoking Section 144 of the CrPC, prohibiting assemblies of four or more people. The police ordered the dispersal of the area within five minutes.
The heightened security measures were prompted by AAP’s call for a “gherao” (encirclement) protest at the Prime Minister’s residence, demanding Kejriwal’s release from custody. Paramilitary personnel in anti-riot gear were deployed along the route to the Prime Minister’s residence and outside the Patel Chowk metro station.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla emphasized that no permission had been granted for the protest, stating, “We have made sufficient deployment at the PM residence and Patel Chowk metro station to maintain law and order. No march or demonstration will be allowed. No route diversions have been implemented.”
Simultaneously, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a counter-protest in the capital, demanding Kejriwal’s resignation as Chief Minister. BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa accused the AAP of attempting to divert attention from an alleged liquor policy scam, claiming that Kejriwal was merely “putting on a show from ED custody.”
