In a significant development, over 600 lawyers, including prominent figures like senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, have penned a letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, expressing deep concern over perceived threats to the integrity of the judiciary.
The lawyers have raised alarm over what they term as a “vested interest group” attempting to undermine the integrity of the judiciary by manipulating judicial processes, influencing court decisions, and tarnishing the reputation of the legal system with unfounded allegations and political agendas.
According to the letter, these tactics are particularly rampant in cases involving allegations of corruption against political figures, where concerted efforts are made to sway court decisions and cast doubts on the impartiality of the judiciary.
The lawyers highlighted several alarming tactics employed by this group, including the fabrication of false narratives aimed at distorting the public’s perception of the judiciary’s functioning. They also pointed out the phenomenon of political flip-flopping, wherein politicians change their stance on legal matters based on their interests, thereby eroding trust in the legal system.
Moreover, the letter emphasized the detrimental impact of attempts to influence the composition of judicial benches and spread misinformation on social media to pressure judges into delivering favorable verdicts.
The lawyers urged the Supreme Court to take decisive action to safeguard the judiciary from external pressures and uphold the rule of law. They stressed the importance of speaking out against such attempts to undermine the integrity of the legal system, emphasizing that silence could inadvertently empower those seeking to do harm.
The letter underscores the critical need for collective action to preserve the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, especially in the face of mounting challenges and threats.
