Yogi Adityanath Targets Abu Azmi Over Aurangzeb Remarks, Calls for ‘Special Treatment’ in UP

Lucknow/Mumbai: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has strongly criticized Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi over his controversial remarks on Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. In a fiery statement made in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday, Yogi Adityanath said Azmi should be expelled from the party and sent to UP, where his government would ensure appropriate “treatment” for him.

“Samajwadi Party… us (Abu Azmi) ko nikalo party se, UP bhej do, baaki upchaar hum apne aap karwa lenge,” he remarked, suggesting that his administration would handle the situation if Azmi was sent to the state.

BJP Attacks SP Over Abu Azmi’s Controversial Comments

The controversy erupted after Abu Azmi claimed that Aurangzeb was not a ruthless ruler and had even contributed to building temples. His statement sparked outrage, particularly among BJP leaders, who accused him of dishonoring Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and distorting history.

Yogi Adityanath criticized SP’s double standards, questioning why the party consistently attacks religious and cultural events like the Maha Kumbh while failing to take action against their MLA who praised Aurangzeb

“A person who disregards the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and instead glorifies Aurangzeb—does he even deserve to stay in this country? The Samajwadi Party must answer this,” Adityanath stated.

“On one hand, you criticize the Maha Kumbh, and on the other, you glorify a ruler who destroyed temples across India. Why can’t you control your own MLA? Why hasn’t the party officially condemned his statement?” he added.

Maharashtra Assembly Suspends Abu Azmi

In response to the backlash, the Maharashtra Assembly suspended Abu Azmi for the entire session. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil announced the decision, stating that Azmi’s remarks had insulted the dignity of the House.

Azmi later defended his comments, insisting that his words had been taken out of context.

“My words have been twisted. I only quoted historians and writers on Aurangzeb. I have not insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj, or any other great leaders,” Azmi clarified in a video statement posted on social media.

Despite standing by his remarks, he issued a conditional apology, stating, “If my statement hurt anyone’s sentiments, I take back my words.”

This controversy has intensified political tensions, with the BJP using the issue to corner the Samajwadi Party, while Azmi’s supporters argue that his statement has been misrepresented.
