Telangana High Court Issues Notices Over Conservation of Qutub Shahi Tombs
Telangana High Court Takes Action Over Alleged Mismanagement of Qutub Shahi Tombs Conservation
Telangana High Court has intervened in a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the conservation of the Qutub Shahi Tombs, a UNESCO-recognized heritage site in Hyderabad. A two-judge bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara, has issued notices to the State Government, the Archaeology and Museums Department, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) following concerns raised about the preservation of these historical structures.
The PIL was filed based on a letter that alleged serious issues with the conservation efforts carried out under a Rs 100 crore project by the AKTC. The letter highlighted multiple concerns, including irreversible damage to the tombs, loss of original architectural elements, and deteriorating conditions caused by improper restoration. It also noted instances of water seepage, structural deterioration, and vandalism that were not adequately addressed.
Among the most concerning claims is the significant damage to the tomb of Md Quli Qutub Shah, where the removal of stone layers has exposed the structure to further harm. The petition calls for strict action against AKTC, demanding the immediate termination of their conservation contract, a thorough investigation into the misuse of funds, and penalties for negligence in preserving this valuable heritage.
