GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan Inspects Asoorkhana and Lal Darwaza for Muharram and Bonalu Arrangements

Samaya Jyothi | Hyderabad, June 11, 2025

In preparation for the upcoming Muharram and Bonalu festivals, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan conducted an on-ground inspection of Asoorkhana and the historic Lal Darwaza Temple in the Charminar zone on Tuesday. Accompanied by the Zonal Commissioner of Charminar, officials reviewed key areas to ensure that all civic and safety arrangements are progressing on schedule.

The inspection comes at a crucial time, as both festivals are set to draw massive crowds from across Hyderabad and beyond. Recognizing the cultural and religious significance of these events, the GHMC has prioritized inter-departmental coordination, sanitation, and crowd management to facilitate a peaceful and smooth experience for devotees.

Focus on Infrastructure and Cleanliness
During the visit, Commissioner Karnan emphasized the need for timely repair of roads, uninterrupted power supply, and efficient waste disposal mechanisms. He instructed sanitation teams to increase the frequency of cleaning operations in and around temple and procession areas. “The cleanliness of these high-traffic areas is non-negotiable. We must maintain hygiene and aesthetic standards throughout the festival period,” he said.

He further directed the engineering teams to complete ongoing infrastructure upgrades—such as street lighting, barricading, and water supply connections—well in advance. These enhancements are crucial for both security personnel and devotees attending processions and rituals.

Canadian and Mexican Responses

Safety and Crowd Management Take Center Stage
Commissioner Karnan also reviewed plans related to public safety, including the deployment of CCTV cameras, fire safety equipment, and emergency response teams. With thousands expected to participate in religious processions, managing the movement of people and vehicles without causing disruptions is a major concern.

“Coordination between the police, fire department, GHMC, and festival committees is essential. Real-time communication and proactive planning will help us prevent any untoward incidents,” Karnan added.

The Zonal Commissioner of Charminar echoed similar sentiments, stating that mock drills and coordination meetings have already been initiated to assess readiness.

Sanitation Drives Before and After the Events
To prevent health hazards, special pre- and post-festival sanitation drives have been scheduled. Public toilets are being repaired, and mobile restroom facilities are expected to be deployed at strategic locations.

“We are also placing emphasis on public awareness campaigns. Informational posters about waste segregation and safe procession conduct will be distributed,” said a senior GHMC health official.

Lal Darwaza Temple and Asoorkhana – Cultural Hotspots
The Lal Darwaza Temple and Asoorkhana are not just religious sites; they are pillars of Hyderabad’s rich cultural heritage. Bonalu, dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, sees the temple adorned with vibrant decorations and traditional drumming. Muharram, observed with deep reverence at the Asoorkhana, brings together communities in remembrance and solidarity.

GHMC’s focused inspection reflects its commitment to preserving the sanctity of these occasions while maintaining civic order.

Public Engagement and Feedback Mechanisms
In a progressive move, the GHMC will also be setting up feedback counters and helplines during the festivals. “We want to ensure that citizens have a channel to report issues in real time. These insights will also help us improve year-on-year,” said the Commissioner.

Residents in nearby localities have responded positively to these proactive measures. Local shopkeepers and community leaders lauded the Commissioner’s efforts, expressing hope for a well-managed festive season.

Digital Monitoring and Data Collection
This year, GHMC is also adopting digital methods to collect data on footfall, waste management, and utility consumption. The insights gathered will contribute to better festival planning in future years.

In closing, Commissioner Karnan reiterated GHMC’s commitment to citizen welfare: “Our job is not just to provide civic services but to ensure that Hyderabad’s rich traditions can be celebrated in safety and dignity. We’re working tirelessly to achieve that goal.”
