Jharkhand Train Accident
In a tragic railway accident near Barabambo station in Jharkhand’s Sereikella-Karksawan district, the Howrah-Mumbai Mail hit a derailed goods train resulting into deaths of two passengers while atleast 20 others sustained injuries. The recent incident was the third in sequence of major railway accidents since June due to which few trains were cancelled/diverted.
Details of the Incident
The mishap took place on Tuesday morning when the Howrah-Mumbai Mail crashed into a goods train at rest after derailing. The impact propelled the leading dozen coaches of Howrah-Mumbai Mail to jump off the track at a distanced place causing fatal casualties and injuries. The rescue operations are currently underway and a team of local authorities and railway officials is working to bring the situation under control.
Rescue Operations
Deputy development commissioner of the Seraikela-Kharsawan district Prabhat Kumar Badiyar said that five deaths have been officially confirmed as all bodies were retrieved from bathrooms after cutting through a coach using gas cutters. As many as 15-20 passengers have sustained injuries and four to five among them are critical, he said. The injured passengers were shifted swiftly to Chakradharpur Railway Hospital for treatment.
Cause of the Accident
The cause of the crash is still to be determined. Initial reports suggest that the Howrah-Mumbai Mail rammed into derailed goods train from behind. Seraikela-Kharsawan police superintendent, Mukesh Lunayat said that the exact cause of mishap is yet being investigated.
Impact on Railway Services:Several trains were cancelled or diverted after the incident hit railway services.
The incident raises on the heels of two other important railway accidents in recent weeks. The Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express was derailed in Uttar Pradesh on July 18, leaving two dead and injuring as many as 20 others. In June, receiving end of the fatal blow ever so sudden this time 15 and more dead when freight train meets Kolkata bound Kanchanjunga Express while at full stop at West Bengal. Also, more than a year back, one of the deadliest train disaster in India which killed 288 lives was caused by signaling error at ODISHA.
To this, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw answered that utmost priority is given by the government to improve safety in wake of growing railway accidents. Last month, in his post-Budget comments he said an all-time high of ₹1.08 lakh crore out of the total allocation under works was earmarked for safety related projects outlaying at a record sum of about ₹2.62 lakh croreflashdata At the same time, for now installation of Kavach an automatic train protection system is one of the topmost priority before government.
