Former Finance Minister Harish Rao Criticizes Implementation of Gruha Jyothi Scheme, Calls for Billing System Reform

Former Finance Minister Harish Rao Raises Concerns Over Implementation of Gruha Jyothi Scheme in Telangana

Former Finance Minister and BRS leader Harish Rao has criticized the implementation of the Gruha Jyothi scheme in Telangana, stating that only 30 lakh out of 90 lakh people with white ration cards have benefited from the scheme. In a post on social media, he highlighted the discrepancies in the billing system, which he claims is causing injustice to lakhs of deserving people.

Harish Rao pointed out that under the current scheme, consumers who use less than 200 units of electricity are not charged any bill. However, if even one unit is consumed more, the entire 201 units are billed. This, he argues, forces consumers to constantly monitor their electricity usage and meter readings, leading to uncertainty and inconvenience, especially for the poor.

He urged for changes to be made in the billing system so that only units consumed above 200 units are billed, with the government bearing the cost of up to 200 units. Rao also expressed concern over the limited coverage of the scheme, stating that while 90 lakh people in Telangana have ration cards, the scheme is only benefiting 30 lakh people, leaving 60 lakh people without the benefits. He emphasized the need for a more inclusive approach to ensure that all deserving people are covered by the scheme.
