The ministry announced that all students in classes 6 through 8 will engage in a 10-day bagless period during which they will intern with local vocational specialists, including carpenters, gardeners, potters, and others.
On Monday, the Union Ministry of Education released new guidelines for implementing bagless days for students in classes 6 to 8. These guidelines aim to make school learning more enjoyable and hands-on while reducing stress. Unveiled on the fourth anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the guidelines were developed by the PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education under the NCERT. NEP 2020 had recommended a 10-day period without school bags for these grades.
The 10 Bagless Days initiative integrates these days into the core teaching process rather than adding them to the existing curriculum. This approach bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. It also introduces students to essential vocational skills, helping them explore and choose future career paths.
During bagless days, students will participate in enjoyable courses that provide hands-on experience with various vocational skills. These might include carpentry, electrical work, metalworking, gardening, pottery, and other crafts based on local needs and preferences.
Students will intern with local vocational professionals such as carpenters, gardeners, and potters. The ministry has suggested scheduling these 10 bagless days at various times throughout the school year. It is advisable to allocate two or three specific periods for these activities. Teachers from all subjects should be involved in planning, and both indoor and outdoor activities can be combined if necessary.
In addition to these guidelines, the NEP anniversary saw the launch of several new initiatives. These include TV channels for teaching various Indian languages, a Tamil-language channel, early-grade primers in 25 Indian languages, career guidance guidelines, and resources for the visually impaired such as braille and audiobooks. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) also introduced a school innovation marathon and a book on graduation attributes and professional competencies. Four books and lecture notes promoting Indian knowledge systems were also released.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized that NEP 2020 has focused on transforming India’s education system. He described it as a beacon of hope for a future-oriented, global, and outcome-focused learning approach. The Akhil Bharatiya Siksha Samagam was organized to celebrate NEP 2020, renew stakeholder commitment, and harness collective efforts to achieve shared educational goals.
