PM Modi Slams Congress Over Lawyers’ Letter to CJI Chandrachud, Alleging Pressure on Judiciary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches a scathing attack on the Congress party after lawyers write to CJI Chandrachud alleging pressure on the judiciary. Get the details here.

The letter to the CJI, signed by eminent lawyers including Harish Salve, Manan Kumar Mishra, and Chetan Mittal, expressed concerns about attempts to pressure the judiciary and tarnish the reputation of courts. PM Modi highlighted the irony of Congress’s demand for a “committed judiciary” while failing to exhibit commitment to the nation.

The lawyers’ letter, titled ‘Judiciary Under Threat – Safeguarding Judiciary From Political and Professional Pressure,’ underscores the gravity of the situation and the need to protect the judiciary from external influences. More than 600 lawyers, including senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra, underscored the detrimental impact of such tactics on India’s democratic fabric.

The missive emphasized the pivotal role of CJI Chandrachud’s leadership in safeguarding the judiciary during these challenging times. It called for the apex court to stand firm and resist external pressures. Additionally, the letter condemned certain lawyers who allegedly defend politicians by day and attempt to influence judges through media channels at night.

PM Modi’s response to the situation underscores the broader debate surrounding the independence and integrity of India’s judiciary, as well as the political dynamics at play within the legal fraternity.
