Coaching students died due to Delhi govt's 'carelessness': Khattar
Union Minister Khattar said that a similar incident happened in Mukherjee Nagar and the court had instructed the MCD to conduct a survey of institutes and make required provisions,Delhi government negligence.
Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar has blamed the Delhi government’s “carelessness” for the deaths of three students at a coaching institute. The tragic incident occurred when rainwater flooded the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar on Saturday evening, leading to the students’ deaths.
Khattar pointed out that a similar incident happened in Mukherjee Nagar, prompting the court to instruct the MCD to survey institutes and implement necessary measures. Despite issuing notices to 1,120 coaching institutes in 2023, no follow-up actions were taken, which could have prevented this tragedy, he said.
The minister criticized the lack of inspections despite the issuance of a fire NOC (No Objection Certificate) in July. He proposed implementing a third-party assessment mechanism to ensure regular inspections and avoid such accidents. Khattar emphasized that all responsible parties should be named in the FIR and that the Delhi government should have ensured drain clearing before the rainy season. The MCD issues building permissions, and the fire department, part of the Delhi government, provides the fire NOC; thus, all related departments should be included in the FIR.
