Authorities Seize 160 Modified Silencers, Warn of Legal Action Against Offenders

Crackdown on Modified Silencers: Authorities Seize 160 Units in Just Two Months

In a significant move to curb noise pollution and unlawful vehicle modifications, local law enforcement agencies have seized 160 modified silencers over the last two months. This aggressive crackdown reflects growing concerns about illegal alterations to two-wheeler exhaust systems, which not only disrupt public peace but also violate traffic regulations.

According to officials, surprise inspections and coordinated operations were carried out across multiple districts, leading to the confiscation of illegally modified silencers. Motorcyclists using these high-decibel exhausts were penalized on the spot, and several cases have now been booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Speaking to Samaya Jyothi, a senior traffic officer stated, “Modifying silencers to create excessive noise is not just a nuisance but a punishable offense. We are committed to enforcing the law strictly. More than 160 silencers have been seized, and offenders have been fined heavily. Repeat violators could face suspension of driving licenses and even vehicle seizure.”

Retailers Under Scrutiny

In a noteworthy development, the crackdown is not limited to vehicle owners. Authorities have warned shopkeepers and auto-accessory sellers that selling or installing modified silencers is also a criminal offense. Multiple stores are now under investigation for allegedly stocking and promoting illegal vehicle modifications.

“We have noticed a rising trend where young bikers are influenced by social media to install loud exhausts for style and thrill. But this comes at the cost of public discomfort. Shopkeepers who supply these parts are equally responsible and will be prosecuted,” the official added.

Public Reaction

The move has received mixed reactions from the public. While some youth expressed disappointment, citing their interest in bike customization, a large section of society has welcomed the action. Senior citizens, parents of infants, and students preparing for exams expressed relief, saying that noisy bikes had become a menace in residential areas.

“Every evening, the streets turned into a racing track. Children would wake up crying, and the elderly were unable to rest. This step by the police is highly appreciated,” said Rekha Ramesh, a resident of Begumpet.

Legal Framework and Penalties

As per Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, driving a vehicle with a modified silencer or one that violates noise emission norms is an offense. Offenders can face:

  • Fines up to ₹10,000

  • Suspension of vehicle registration

  • Imprisonment in severe cases

Moreover, the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) stipulate strict noise emission limits for motor vehicles, which modified silencers often exceed by a large margin.

Legal experts highlight that the law applies not just to bikers but to manufacturers and retailers who enable such modifications. “Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Anyone facilitating these violations is liable to be prosecuted,” says Advocate Venu Kumar, a traffic law specialist.

Call for Awareness

Police departments are also planning awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers and illegality of such modifications. Posters, social media content, and school outreach programs are in the pipeline.

The crackdown will continue in the coming weeks, and tip-offs from the public are being encouraged. Citizens can report modified vehicles via WhatsApp helplines or the official traffic app.

The authorities have made it clear: modifying bike silencers will not be tolerated, and both users and sellers will be held accountable.
