- Telangana Tunnel Collapse: Rescue Operations Enter 15th Day with Advanced Robotics and Cadaver Dogs
Telangana Government Deploys Advanced Robotic Technology for Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue
Nagarkurnool, Telangana – March 9, 2025: The rescue operation at the collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana has entered its 15th day, with rescue teams leveraging advanced technology and trained cadaver dogs to locate the eight individuals trapped since February 22.
Officials confirmed that cadaver dogs from the Kerala police force, specifically of the Belgian Malinois breed, have been instrumental in identifying two possible locations where human presence could be detected. These dogs, known for their acute olfactory senses, are capable of detecting human scent from depths of up to 15 feet, significantly aiding rescue efforts.
Cadaver Dogs Aid in Search for Trapped Workers in Telangana Tunnel Collapse
The highly trained cadaver dogs were introduced to the rescue operation on Friday morning. Teams carefully guided them inside the tunnel, where they pinpointed two potential locations within the debris. The rescue personnel immediately began removing silt and rubble at these identified points, raising hopes of reaching the trapped individuals.
Authorities have been facing persistent challenges, including water seepage, unstable tunnel structures, and oxygen depletion, making the rescue mission exceedingly difficult. Despite these hurdles, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, the Navy, and other specialized agencies continue their relentless efforts to save those still inside.

State Government Deploys Robotic Technology for Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue
State Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, who has been actively monitoring the rescue operations, announced the deployment of robotic technology to enhance rescue capabilities. Speaking to the media on Saturday, he explained that teams have progressed up to 13.95 kilometers inside the tunnel, but the final 50 meters remain a major obstacle due to extreme instability.
“The last segment is highly dangerous due to oxygen depletion, continuous water seepage, and the presence of metal debris from the collapsed Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). We have introduced robots equipped with high-resolution cameras, infrared sensors, and robotic arms to navigate these conditions and assist in the extraction process,” Minister Reddy stated.
Financial and Logistical Support for Rescue Operations
To bolster ongoing efforts, the Telangana government has allocated Rs 4 crore for the robotic rescue system. These funds will be used to acquire and deploy additional technology necessary to safely reach the trapped individuals.
The minister commended the tireless dedication of all officials, engineers, rescue workers, and experts involved in the mission. He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the families of those trapped, ensuring they receive all necessary assistance and compensation.
Public and Expert Reactions
Engineering and disaster response experts have lauded the introduction of robotic technology, calling it a necessary step given the dire conditions inside the tunnel. “Deploying robots reduces risk to human rescuers while providing crucial insights into inaccessible areas,” said a senior engineer involved in the project.
Family members of the trapped workers have expressed anxiety over the prolonged rescue operation but remain hopeful with the introduction of advanced technology. “We are waiting with hope and prayers. The government and teams are doing their best, and we trust that they will bring our loved ones back safely,” said one anxious relative outside the rescue site.
The SLBC tunnel collapse has become one of the most challenging rescue missions in recent memory. With cadaver dogs identifying key locations and robotic systems set to aid in the final phase, officials are hopeful that the trapped individuals can be reached soon. The next few days will be crucial as rescue teams work tirelessly to achieve a breakthrough in the mission.
