Plane Crashes into Medics Having Lunch at BJ Medical College: 20 Dead, Several Injured

Samaya Jyothi | Ahmedabad – In a horrifying and unexpected tragedy, a small aircraft crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least 20 medical students and staff while they were having lunch in the mess hall. Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. According to officials, all passengers aboard the aircraft also died in the crash, leaving no survivors.

The shocking incident unfolded just past noon, a time usually filled with chatter, laughter, and clinking plates at the college’s lunch facility. Eyewitnesses say the tranquility of the afternoon was shattered by a thunderous roar as the aircraft plummeted from the sky and crashed directly into the mess building, creating a massive explosion and spreading debris across the hostel grounds.

The medical college, located in the heart of Ahmedabad and relatively close to the city airport, had always operated under the watchful eye of low-flying aircraft. However, no one could have imagined such a horrific turn of events.

“The elders say when the time is not right, even a palm tree can turn into a snake and bite,” said a grieving student who narrowly escaped the incident. “We always saw planes pass overhead, but we never thought one would fall from the sky and kill our friends.”

Initial investigations suggest a mechanical failure may have caused the pilot to lose control of the plane during descent. Airport authorities confirmed that the aircraft had reported technical difficulties minutes before losing contact with air traffic control. It was headed for an emergency landing, but tragically, it did not make it.

Emergency services, including fire brigades, disaster response teams, and paramedics, reached the site within minutes. The scene they encountered was harrowing—flames engulfed what remained of the mess building, and cries for help echoed from within the rubble.

Despite their quick arrival, rescuers were met with severe challenges. Many of the bodies found were unrecognizable due to the force of the explosion and the ensuing fire. Officials have stated that DNA testing may be required for proper identification. Among the injured, many suffered severe burns and fractures and remain in critical condition.

This is not just a loss for BJ Medical College but for the medical fraternity at large. These were future doctors—young individuals committed to saving lives. Their journey was cut short by an unforeseen disaster, leaving families and the community grappling with sorrow.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and promised a full-scale inquiry. “This is a dark day for Gujarat,” he stated. “We will ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted to determine how such a catastrophic incident occurred in a populated educational zone.”

In response to the tragedy, the Gujarat government has announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured. Educational institutions across the state observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims.

For the surviving students at BJ Medical College, the shock runs deep. Counseling services have been deployed on campus to help them cope with the trauma. Students who witnessed the accident described scenes of chaos, screams, and confusion.

“It all happened in seconds,” said another student. “We were sitting and eating, and then everything exploded. Some of my closest friends are gone.”

A memorial is being planned on the campus grounds, and tributes have poured in from across the country—from medical professionals, politicians, and the public alike. Many have taken to social media to express their grief and outrage, demanding stricter aviation safety regulations near populated educational institutions.

As investigations continue and questions pile up, one thing remains painfully clear—on an ordinary afternoon meant for rest and nourishment, tragedy descended from the sky, forever changing the lives of dozens.
