Andhra Pradesh Goes Green with One Crore Saplings

CM Chandrababu Naidu Launches Massive Green Drive; Andhra Pradesh to Plant Five Crore Saplings with Komera Ankarao as Forest Advisor

Andhra Pradesh Launches One Crore Plantation Drive on World Environment Day

Vijayawada, June 5 — On the occasion of World Environment Day, Andhra Pradesh witnessed a historic green initiative with the launch of Vana Mahotsava celebrations. Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu participated in the event alongside prominent environmentalists, including Komera Ankarao, a lifelong nature conservationist. The state government unveiled a plan to plant one crore saplings immediately, with a vision to plant five crore saplings across Andhra Pradesh within the next year.

The program aims to significantly boost greenery in the region and combat the growing concerns of deforestation, climate change, and plastic pollution. The State Forest and Environment Department has pledged to increase the state’s green cover to 50 percent, encouraging citizen participation in afforestation and conservation activities.

Addressing the gathering, CM Naidu emphasized the urgency of environmental conservation, saying, “This is not just about planting trees; it’s about securing the future of our children. Every sapling is a symbol of hope.”

Honoring a Lifelong Environmentalist

The event was further elevated by the presence of Komera Ankarao, who was invited as the chief guest. Ankarao’s journey toward environmental activism began at the age of 14, when he witnessed a bird die after ingesting plastic waste. Since then, he has dedicated over three decades of his life to environmental protection, raising awareness about pollution, plastic hazards, and the importance of native vegetation.

Recognizing his commitment, the government announced the appointment of Komera Ankarao as the State Forest Department Advisor, a position of great responsibility and influence. His appointment has been welcomed widely by environmental groups and citizens, with many seeing it as a step in the right direction.

Canadian and Mexican Responses

Planting the Seeds of a Greener Tomorrow

The state’s ambitious plan includes the establishment of urban forests, Miyawaki forests, and improved fire prevention systems. One of the key focuses is on controlling plastic waste and encouraging biodegradable alternatives. The government will work in collaboration with schools, NGOs, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and industry partners to ensure community-level involvement.

Officials also confirmed that a robust monitoring and survival audit system will be implemented to track sapling growth and survival rate, ensuring accountability and long-term success.

Community Involvement and Eco-Education

The CM and state officials urged citizens to become “Green Guardians” by adopting saplings and nurturing them in their localities. As part of the campaign, students, government employees, farmers, and local leaders will participate in plantation drives, clean-up programs, and eco-awareness campaigns.

Komera Ankarao, in his keynote speech, remarked, “Planting a tree is the simplest yet most profound act anyone can do for the planet. I am honored to serve in this new role and help Andhra Pradesh lead by example in environmental stewardship.”

The launch ceremony witnessed cultural performances, exhibitions of eco-friendly technologies, and distribution of free saplings. Schoolchildren took pledges to safeguard their environment, adding an emotional and inspiring layer to the day’s events.

Moving Towards a Sustainable Future

This initiative aligns with India’s broader commitment to achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Andhra Pradesh’s green mission is poised to become a model for other states by showing how policy, public will, and grassroots activism can converge for a better tomorrow.

The State Forest Department reiterated that ongoing efforts would also include scientific plantation techniques, satellite-based monitoring, and developing green corridors along highways and riverbanks.
